He Wouldn’t Kiss Another Guy
If you know Will Smith from his roles in Bad Boys and Men in Black, you may think that he rose to fame quickly. But that’s not the case at all. In order for him to rise to stardom, he needed independent films like Six Degrees of Separation. starring Smith as a charming homosexual conman, the picture provided an opportunity for him to blossom as a distinct artist. Smith conned unsuspecting individuals into thinking he was the son of Sidney Poitier as he made his way up the Upper Eastside. This video, based on the true story of con artist David Hampton, will have you laughing out loud and will certainly have you talking!
The original screenplay contained a moment in which Smith is passionately kissed by another guy, in recognition of the fact that Smith is playing a homosexual character in the film. In spite of the director’s annoyance, Smith refused to budge from his stance. Smith decided against filming the sequence after hearing Denzel Washington’s advise. It was too much for the director to bear, so he decided to fake the kiss from a different position. In hindsight, Smith calls his choice “extremely immature,” but he attributes it to the reason that he “wasn’t emotionally stable enough to artistically commit to that component of the picture.”
