Skipping E
When having papers graded you’re usually aiming for the higher letters, possibly an A, but definitely C or above. So you might not have thought much about what happens further down the line, and it might surprise you.
There is no “E” used when teachers are grading. That’s right: it goes from D down to an F for “Fail.” Quite rightly, non-Americans who have noticed this think that it’s pretty weird. I wonder what the reason for it is, perhaps it’s like some roads missing the number 13, maybe it’s unlucky.
