#54: My Wings Are Tied
I’ve always wondered why we call having no money “being broke.” One of the definitions of “break” is to be ruined financially, and it slowly transformed into “broke” as a colloquial term. “Broc” was also a term centuries ago to describe misery or affliction. Still, the Persian version seems more accurate and forgiving.

I say we stop using broke and go for something a bit more poetic. I don’t have any suggestions, but surely one of you reading this can start a movement online and get the next generation to use different terminology. All it would take is a well-crafted Tiktok. After all, pop culture has significant sway on what we say. Just look at “sick” and “cool”!
