Meryl Streep became multilingual as Sophie
Meryl Streep learned Polish and German for her part as Sophie (or Zofia Zawistowski) in ‘Sophie’s Choice,’ a woman with many skills. In the late 1940s, an immigrant named Sophie came to New York.
She learned Polish to have a genuine Polish accent while speaking English. She also had to learn German for certain portions of the film, so she did that as well and used her acquired Polish accent. Now THAT’S some forethought!
