Mi-nyeo’s meaningful line was lost in translation
It must have been a complicated process to turn Squid Game into English, and while their efforts are appreciated, some fluent Korean speakers were critical of the word choices in crucial moments such as this one.
When Mi-nyeo is looking for a partner for the marble game, the English sub says one thing, while the English CC says something else, and in reality, her line is much more like, “I’ve just never had the time to study, but I’m really intelligent.” Her intelligence and desire to learn but never having the opportunity to do so add another layer to her character and criticism of class and capitalism in Korean society. However, this was lost in translation.
