Really, Don’t They Have Tampons on Mars?
I had to check if this was true! Sally Ride is widely remembered for being the first American woman to go to space (after two Russian female cosmonauts). According to a viral video on YouTube, NASA gave her 100 tampons to take with her, for only six days. According to an article from History.com, when six women (including Ride) were chosen to join NASA’s astronaut class of 1978, there was a lot of gender bias to deal with. NASA even asked Ride to help in developing a makeup kit to be used in space.
About the tampons – NASA suggested the women astronauts take 100 tampons with them to space for a week. It didn’t necessarily happen, but NASA did suggest it. Which, if you think of it, is quite nice. They weren’t so sure what to do with women, but they did try to accommodate them, which isn’t so bad.
