Night Watch
We are always surprised to find out what weird things men think or assume today. It makes much more sense when we hear about men from long ago having misconceptions about female bodies. Obviously, these things were much less discussed. So, it’s not that surprising to hear misconceptions someone’s grandfather, who was born in 1920, had. But still, this one is interesting.
The woman who posted this read her grandmother’s memoir and found out that her grandfather didn’t realize that babies could be born during the day. Many people believe that babies are born at night. There might even be an evolutionary explanation for this: It used to be safer for our ancestors to give birth at night. But granddad took this rule of thumb way too literally, and when his wife went into labor during the day, he thought she was dying. This is very dramatic and quite sad. I hope he found out what was really going on fast enough, and wasn’t worried sick for too long.
