Beauty is Pain
Corsets were a way of life back in the Regency and Victorian eras and most women wore them every day without so much as a peep. That doesn’t mean that the restrictive undergarments didn’t cause discomfort on a daily basis but Bridgerton did include some subtle hints to showcase this.
Take, for example, the scene where Prudence Featherington bends over as her maids squeeze her corset tighter. This is after her mother is dismayed that her waist is larger than an “orange and a half.” There’s also a moment in the first episode where you can see Daphne’s bruises and cuts from her corset. We suppose when you have to live up to society’s beauty standards, you do what you have to do.
