47 Ronin – $98 million
You’d think that Hollywood would be wary of offering a huge production budget to an upcoming, relatively unknown director. But it was exactly this that generated hype for the film 47 Ronin. Carl Rinsch didn’t have very many movies under his belt, but H2F Entertainment was willing to gamble on the director.

But their gamble didn’t pay off. Not even internet sweetheart Keanu Reeves, who took the lead role in the 47 Ronin, could help save the action flick. Hollywood tossed $175 million to make 47 Ronin and made about $151 million back. Tack on promotional costs, and Carl was looking at a loss of $98 million.
