John Carter – $200 million
If you haven’t heard of Disney’s sci-fi flick John Carter before, we don’t blame you. Disney only spent about $300 million to make and promote the movie. Put simply, John Carter was about a civil war veteran who, for some reason, wound up on Mars. Sounds historically accurate enough, so why didn’t this movie do well?
It’s hard to pinpoint where things went wrong for John Carter. They had an over-inflated budget, the cast was okay, the script was cheesy but sort of funny. However, rumors claim that Andrew Stanton, the director, planned for the movie to bomb. But if that’s the case, why toss so much money down the drain in the process?
