Choosing the Right School for Your Kids

May 6, 2020 by MamaBee

Choosing the right school for your child can be a daunting task. There are lots of different things to consider and for parents who are enrolling their first child in school, this can get even more challenging. So what do you consider when selecting the right school for your kids?

Location

The location of a school is very important because it will determine how far they have to travel to get to school. This means that you might have to make arrangements like travel arrangments or even boarding or renting arrangements for college-aged kids. Do you drive them to school or do they take public transportation? Do they use the accommodation facilities provided by the school or do you rent them an apartment away from the school? These are just some of the few questions you might have to think about.

Extra-curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities are important for a child’s development. You want a school that has a good selection of these like athletics, music, theatre, or other activities. Clubs are also very important for the development of a child’s confidence and social skills. Try to choose a school that has a lot of these activities so your kids have an easier time choosing something that works for them.

Much More Than Academics

You may want your kid to learn more than they teach in a classroom. Faith-based schools like Visitation School teach virtues like patience, humility, and gentleness. This ensures that your child is well-rounded when they graduate. Also, all of these are great character traits your kids could carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Academic Performance

The main aim of choosing a good school for your child is to ensure they can go as far as possible in their academic endeavors. For this, they need to have a good academic foundation. The school you choose for your kids should have a good academic and graduation record. The graduation record is the percentage of kids who graduate to high school or college. If the number is very high, enrolling your child in such a school is the best thing you could do.

Financial Grants

Some families need a little financial help to get their kids through schools. Such families should look at schools that give financial aid and grants to kids who are needy. Some of them also give these grants and aid to kids who do well academically.

If your kid is gifted in some way, they could also get scholarships that could carry them through high school or college.

Student to Teacher Ratio

When the student to teacher ratio is too high, teachers are not able to pay close attention to all their students. A good student to teacher ration is 20:1. Anything below this is perfect.

Selecting the right school for your kids can make a lot of difference in their lives. Try to select a school that aligns with what you want them to achieve and one that has a good academic record to give them the best chance of succeeding.
