#4 The Hunchback of Notre Dame
When making The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996, Disney did the unthinkable: they adapted a public domain novel instead of a public domain fairytale! The film, based on a novel by Victor Hugo, was met with lukewarm reviews from audiences compared to anything else Disney released before then.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame may have suffered because it was so dedicated to staying true to the book, which was far too dark and serious compared to the family-friendly film. Now, it hits a little too close to home with its friendzone message.
