Most HOAs require residents to hire contractors, plumbers, and other home services from a pre-approved list of vendors. It’s a common practice, so keep it in mind if you’re thinking of moving somewhere that has an HOA. This person wasn’t aware of this common HOA practice, so they were unpleasantly surprised. 

They still can’t believe that homeowners in the community have to hire window washers from a list of pre-approved window-washing companies. It’s annoying, but understandable. HOAs are usually concerned with maintaining the overall standards of a community, so they want to make sure the work people get done in their homes is well-done and high-quality.
