Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
When your landlord is showing your apartment to prospective new renters, it would be wise to forewarn him of any damage before he gets into the space. Landlords don’t like any surprises to their property. They may not be thrilled to hear there’s been damage, but they certainly appreciate a heads-up.

The lesson here seems to be that if they confront you with something they’ve discovered, don’t offer any more information than necessary. This tenant talked themselves right out of their security deposit. If you ask us, this one is definitely a foul on the renter’s part. The landlord is probably right to keep the security deposit.
