Every house seems to have that one closet that might be almost large enough to act as a tiny bedroom. One popular design is to use the space under a staircase as a storage closet. As children, we often imagined it would be fun to turn that space into our very own private area.

However, we learned in Harry Potter that the cupboard under the stairs wasn’t such an ideal living space after all. It was a terrible way to treat a boy, so we’re guessing that this joke about keeping an uncle under the stairs is their way of saying they aren’t very fond of this uncle. Poor man!
