36. He’s Gone Feral
Hiroo Onoda, the last Imperial Japanese soldier to surrender, spent 29 years in isolation in the Philippines, unaware that the war had ended. He refused to believe Allied leaflets urging surrender, convinced Japan could not lose. Only when his retired commanding officer personally ordered surrender did he relent.
Despite his survival narrative, Onoda’s actions had darker consequences, terrorizing locals, killing civilians, and damaging crops. While some view him as a hero, his disregard for civilian lives and adherence to a lost cause paint a different picture. Onoda’s story is a cautionary tale of misplaced loyalty and the devastation of war’s aftermath.
