The Hawaii State Fish
You may go cross-eyed after reading the twenty-one-lettered name of the Hawaii state fish, although you have heard of it before if you’ve ever seen director Nicholas Stoller’s 2008 romantic comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Are you ready? The humuhumunukunukuapua’a — pronounced “who-moo-who-moo-noo-noo-koo-ah-ooo ah-ah” — was chosen as the official Hawaii state fish in 1984.
After no debate for re-election, the fish stuck indefinitely as Hawaii’s state fish in 2006. The incredibly long name of the fish is ironic, considering it’s only about 10 inches long. Humuhumunukunukuapua’a means “trigger fish with a pig’s snout”. Yeah, there’s really nothing not strange about the Hawaii state fish.
