Vog Vs. Smog
Island skies usually aren’t polluted due to the lack of exhaust clouds. However, Hawaiian skies are covered with vog, which is air pollution that occurs from volcanic activity. It is not to be confused with smog, which is much worse. Logs produced from the volcanic activity from Kilauea’s, which has been considered active since 1983 on the Big Island.
The vog regularly spreads to different islands in Hawaii and can be uncomfortable for individuals that suffer from asthma, cystic fibrosis, or other respiratory illnesses. However, on the island of Maui, the vog results in gorgeous sunsets and stunning moonrises, which intensify the sun and moon, making them look big and orange.
