Your Royal Highness
A special fact about Hawaii that separates itself from the rest of the country is that it is the only state to annually crown a queen. But don’t get too excited. This isn’t exactly a queen from a royal family. May 1st in Hawaii is May Day, also known as Lei Day.
A festival occurs every year at Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki where live music is played and exquisite lei contests are held where the most beautiful ones are displayed. Every year, a woman has been crowned the Lei Queen. She is selected based on her lei-making skills, hula proficiency, and Hawaiian language fluency.
