Education in Hawaii
The oldest established high school existing west of the Rocky Mountains is located in Hawaii. Lahainaluna High School, located in Lahaina on the island of Maui, was originally founded in 1831 as a Protestant missionary school. What makes Lahainaluna High School so special is that it was the first school in Hawaii to offer Western-style education.
Today, about 1000 students in Maui, the second-largest island of the Hawaii Islands, are attending Lahainaluna High School and re-enroll until they have finished grades 9-12 — the only grades taught in the institution. The graveyard located behind the school is where some teachers, students, and early pioneers have been put to rest.
