Hawaiian Houses of Worship
Not only is the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace the oldest church in Hawaii’s capital of Honolulu, but it is actually the oldest church in all of the United States. It still operates today as a place of worship for religious Christians and Catholics. The cathedral was built during Hawai’i’s missionary era and served as the primary church of the Hawaiian Islands.
Founded in 1843, the cathedral is also known by its original French name Cathedrale de Notre Dame de la Paix, its Portuguese variant Catedral de Nossa Senhora de Paz, and in Hawaiian, it’s known as Maila o ka Malu Hale Plue Nui. However, the two most common languages in Hawaii are English and Hawaiian.
