Illegal Sunscreens
This fact about Hawaii is extremely surprising as its tropical climate, especially in extremely sunny places like Honolulu, requires the use of sunscreen all year long, and even more so if you have very fair skin. This is in order to protect their coral reefs. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals regularly found in many sunscreen brands, are detrimental to coral reefs.
This law was implemented in January 2021, and now Hawaii only sells reef-safe sunscreen. In fact, that is the only type of sunscreen that is allowed to be sold throughout the whole state. It may be difficult to find the correct sunscreen in your hometown. If you travel to Hawaii, best to just buy sunscreen when you get there.
