Save Some Pi For Einstein
Pi steals the spotlight every March 14th with its official national holiday, but it also shares the day with another mathematical wonder: Albert Einstein. The German-born physicist known for giving us the compact E = mc2to describe mass-energy equivalence was coincidentally born on March 14th in 1879, more than 100 years before Pi Day was a thing.
As a result of this curious coincidence, many Pi Day parties include an ode to Einstein. The San Francisco Exploratorium sings “Happy Birthday” in Einstein’s honor, which is thoughtful but also a little amusing considering birthday parties weren’t his jam. He was quoted as saying, “It is a known fact that I was born, and that is all that is necessary.”
