The Other Pie Day
Thirteen years before Larry Shaw and his coworkers honored π by eating the similarly-named dessert, Boulder, Colorado-based nuclear engineer Charlie Papazian declared January 23rd National Pie Day. The date also happens to be Papazian’s birthday, a time when he opts for a candlelit pie instead of the traditional cake and ice cream.

Unlike the mathematically based π Day, National Pie Day is not an officially recognized holiday. However, in 1986 the American Pie Counsel helped spread the word and started sponsoring our new day dedicated to gluttony. Now that I let you in on the short and sweet history, I’ll be expecting a slice from you next year.
