Pies of All Kinds Count
When we hear “pie,” our imaginations typically run straight to the bakery where the sugary confections tease our tastebuds from inside the thick glass cases, but if your teeth run more savory than sweet, you can head over to the nearest pizzeria on March 14th to show your love for Pi Day thanks to some linguistic gymnastics performed in the late 1880s.
When Italian immigrants brought pomidore pizza to the United States, they had the challenge of giving the dish an English-friendly name that would help Americans understand what they were ordering. The circular shape and evenly cut slices resembled a pie, earning it the nickname “tomato pie.” Since all round pies count, pizza is totally permissible on Pi Day.
