The ground in this picture looks like a wasteland. Do you see the cracks in the soil? How did it get so dry that the ground became chapped like that? This is called expansive soil, which has a higher clay ratio than regular soil that people normally build homes on.
The problem with expansive soil is, well, it expands when introduced to rainwater. Due to the hot climate, the muddy soil will dry out and leave these cracks in the ground that can cause a home’s foundation to shift. The solution would have been to add more soil to the ground to create a stronger clay-to-dirt ratio, but this homeowner is way past that point now.
