Toilet in The Basement
Seriously, what is it with basements and totally bizarre findings? This OP found a working toilet at the top of the basement stairs in their home and couldn’t figure out what the point of it was. Well, it’s one thing to have a private space with walls but this random toilet with zero privacy really had us scratching our heads…until we did some research.
As it turns out, these are usually found in pre-World War II era homes and they weren’t supposed to be used at all. Because of vintage plumbing technology, sewage backups were pretty common back in the day. Toilets like these were installed in the basement to prevent back up into the main part of the house. It’s really as simple as that.
