If you’ve ever clapped to control lights or gadgets, you’ve used The Clapper, a relic from the ’80s. It made turning devices on and off with a simple clap possible, a magic unfortunately lost on later generations.

Since its 1985 launch, The Clapper has sold over seven million units, evolving with remote-operated and voice-command options. It begs the question: Is clapping to operate gadgets any more surreal than conversing with Siri or Alexa?
