How to Yell Less as a Parent

July 13, 2021 by Kristen Reed

So many parents struggle with yelling less often at their kids. This is a normal response to a chaotic situation, yelling. Some people are just naturally more prone to yelling whereas others are quieter and poised in their response to kids.

Many parents are wondering if yelling has become the new spanking and it doesn’t help anyone. If you tend to be a yeller but want to yell less as a parent, then please do continue reading for tips that will help you achieve this goal.

Know Your Triggers

The number one reason you yell is that something triggered you to respond this way. The first step towards yelling less is to know your triggers. Consider how tired you get or if you’re not tending to your own needs often enough and figure out a way to keep yourself in the appropriate mindset to avoid yelling.

Learning what makes you more susceptible to yelling and adjusting your life to curb these triggers will go a long way in the process of yelling less as a parent.

Give a Warning

There’s nothing wrong with letting your kids know that you’re starting to get frustrated and may yell soon. Giving your kids a warning that you’re about to pop a gasket will help them slow down and make changes so that they don’t do things to cause the eruption.

By giving this warning you’re using communication to express emotion and thus teaching your kids a better way to handle that frustration point in life.

Make a Yes List

This will be a list of appropriate ways to respond when you feel like yelling. The list can include ideas like go to the bathroom with the door shut and breathe. Step outside and sit on the porch for a few minutes. Or anything else that helps you feel more at ease and calm during the day.

Having a yes list in a visible location will help remind you to take control of your mind and responses during heightened emotional situations.

You see, we all have triggers and days when we’re feeling overwhelmed by the day’s events. This is a common situation to be in, but yelling at your kids doesn’t solve anything. That’s why we hope that you’ll use our tips to start yelling less as a parent in the near future.
