The Mother Of Miami
Miami is a hotspot for fun in the sun with its rich culture and beautiful beaches, but did you know that it’s the only major U.S. city founded by a woman? In 1891, Cleveland, Ohio native Julia DeForrest Tuttle took her business savvy down south after her husband passed away and bought herself 640 acres of land.

She envisioned a future where Miami would be an expansive, bustling city. She made it happen by convincing a millionaire to bring the railroads and his money down to the area. She established several businesses, including a hotel, bakery, and laundry, and within five years, Miami officially became an incorporated city, growing over time into the metropolis we know today.
