International Women’s Day is heavily commercialized in China. In addition to getting half a day off work, Chinese women can find great deals on skincare and cosmetics. Feminine hygiene products are typically the cheapest on IWD, but it’s not only the supermarkets that are concerned with what goes on below the belt.
It’s common for Chinese companies to offer their female employees gifts on Women’s Day as a token of their appreciation. Sometimes those gifts are ultra-personal, like in 2020 when one company gave its female staff underwear washing machines. The unique gift might seem strange, but the recipients had no complaints.
