Loopholes in Seinfeld We Can’t Ignore Any Longer

You’ve seen it happen on a number of different shows. All of a sudden, a character starts only appearing from the waist up. During Seinfeld’s run, Julia Louis Dreyfus was pregnant in real life, twice. However, because her character Elaine was not pregnant, the show had to come up with various ways to hide Julia’s pregnancy.

In some episodes, Elaine can be seen in oversized clothing or physically hiding behind furniture. In fact, in one episode, she gets stuck on the subway and is almost exclusively filmed from the waist up while she stands in a throng of people. That also explains the ridiculously large gift she’s carrying. There’s not much else to do though when reality and fiction collide.
