This is a little history lesson for all of you out there who have never heard of the American civil war before. It was a war fought in the 1800s between two sides, the north, and the south. The north represented the union whereas the south represented the confederacy, bitter rivals that still leave traces to this day. 

It ended with the north defeating the south, but that did not stop the south from keeping their flags and symbols alive. Things you can still see all around the southern states of America. Interesting how such an old war still leaves a mark that can be felt in the modern era.
