#31: Festivus – It’s for the Rest of Us
Festivus, the secular holiday made up by Frank Costanza, has jumped from the TV screen and infiltrated the traditions of the fans at home. Canonically celebrated on December 23rd, fans celebrate anytime throughout December. Festivus may be one of the show’s longest-lasting and most impressionable moments. Those who celebrate at home will often mark the event by decorating with the traditional aluminum pole.

During this episode, everyone gathers to celebrate the made-up holiday. George, pleading with everyone to intervene, is forced to play out the evening’s planned activities in front of his boss and friends. For those unfamiliar with Festivus, several rituals exist for starting and ending the evening. We all know George has many issues, and this episode gives us a peek into his childhood and the psychology behind the character.
