John Cash Performs for Prison
Now here’s something you may not see today. Musician Johnny Cash actually toured prisons in the late 1960s and performed concerts for the inmates. The superstar began doing this after prisoners wrote to him following the success of his song, “Folsom Prison Blues.”
His performance at the Folsom prison was even recorded live and released as his 27th album. The inmates were in for a treat since Cash performed each song twice, in case the first wasn’t good enough. Before his show concluded, Cash performed “Greystone Chapel,” which is actually a song written by Folsom inmate Glen Sherley, who Cash is shaking hands with in the photo.
