The Famous Lion
Who isn’t familiar with MGM’s roaring lion at the beginning of the film company’s movies? Just before the movie begins, the lights dim, you’ve already eaten a little of that delicious buttery popcorn and then you hear it — the famous roar. That roar triggers your brain to know that you’re about to settle in and enjoy a movie. Such a good feeling.
MGM used two different lions in 1917 in order to get that famous sound bite. In fact, if you look closely you can tell a difference between the two lions from their teeth. The first lion the studio used was named Slats, and later renamed Leo. And the second was Jackie. After enjoying a few short years of work both lions retired.
