The Building of Mount Rushmore
Have you ever stopped to think about Mount Rushmore? The faces of four U.S. presidents are carved there into the stone. They include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. However odd it might be to have a monument to these four presidents off the side of the mountain in South Dakota, it remains a popular and iconic vision today.
The building of this monument wasn’t simple due to difficult conditions and weather. However, because the work took place during The Great Depression, many were grateful to have the opportunity to work. One worker boasted that he was earning $8 a day to work on the historical memorial. What wasn’t fun? The men working there hung from great heights on small chairs that were supported by 3/8 inch cables- yikes!
