Making Money at Mount Rushmore
As we’ve just discussed- Mount Rushmore was built during The Great Depression, a time when many American families were desperate for cash to clothe and feed their families. One such man worked at Mount Rushmore and came up with a pretty clever scheme with which to make some money on the side.
Visitors were allowed to come see the monument being built, and many were so impressed with it that they wanted to leave with a souvenir. A man working on the ground would actually sell rocks that fell from the work above to these tourists. In fact, he would even play a game to get the price higher and higher, thus making some serious money.
