The Photo of The Great Depression
While Mount Rushmore is being built in one part of the United States, Florence Owens Thompson was trying to navigate the difficult times with her young family. Desperate for food and money, Owens took her family out looking for work.
Having found all the crops devastated, Owens and her children stopped at a pea farm where over 3,000 other hungry families were waiting and looking for work. During her stop there, Owens made her kids a meager meal. This photo shows them after they came back to their mother, asking for more food. The story behind this famous photo would break any mother’s heart.
