We know ATMs are clunky bank computers that read our plastic cards then eat or spit out money, but few people realize they’re more closely related to our home computer than we thought. Most ATMs use Windows or Linux operating systems, and there are fossils out there still running Windows XP.

Knowing that the brains behind the banking are a Windows computer makes it a little less surprising this Redditor’s card was gobbled up because the ATM decided to take an update nap. Windows lives by its own rules. It doesn’t care if you’re making a deposit the night before rent is due or taking out a twenty to buy those girl scout cookies you’ve been waiting all year for.
