Chernobyl Survivor
Coraline, released in 2009 is a stop-motion animated fantasy-horror film that is both evocative and emotional. Besides, the level of detail in the movie is truly applaudable. One such detail is the medal worn by Coraline’s oddball neighbor Mr. Bobinsky (Ian Mc Shane). While no explanation is offered for the medal it’s obvious that it’s important to him considering he never removes it.
Apparently, the medal was given to Chernobyl liquidators who were brought in to deal with the consequences after the nuclear disaster. Unfortunately, many of them suffered physical and mental health issues for years after this incident. This explains Mr. Bobinsky’s blue skin and his eccentricity.
