The Rockwell House in Georgia
The Samuel Rockwell House was erected for Colonel Samuel Rockwell, a well-known attorney and slave trader in Georgia. He did not spare any punches while designing his mansion in the center of a 1.6-acre plot in Milledgeville. The home was ultimately abandoned in 1969 after passing through numerous owners’ hands for over a century.
The early owner passed away in 1841, and the property’s title eventually ended up in the hands of former Georgia Governor Herschel Vespasian. Years of disrepair have reduced the home to near-ruin, and attempts to restore the second story nearly caused it to burn down.
