Bannerman’s Castle in New York
You haven’t seen anything yet if you thought the Abercrombie family’s 50-acre wooded forest and castle were isolated. Take a look at the Bannerman’s Castle on Pollepel Island in New York, which no one would believe to be a mansion sitting on an island in New York, much alone an abandoned one.
In 1900, Francis Bannerman VI, a Scottish immigrant, bought the tiny island. He initially acquired the island to construct a weapons storage facility for his military surplus firm. Still, one thing happened after another, and he ended up with a castle in New York. It was never completed, though. After he died in 1918 and three decades later became state property.
