Dundas Castle in New York
The Dundas Castle, known as the Castle of Sorrow, is home to one of New York’s most intriguing mysteries. Ralph Wurst-Dundas bought the thousand-acre estate and planned to build the castle, but he died before it was finished. His widow, Josephine, was committed to an institution shortly after his death, so their daughter Muriel inherited the castle and plot of land.
After his death, Ralph bequeathed $40 million to his daughter, with the bulk of that money stolen by investment fraudsters. Muriel fled to the United Kingdom when she was in financial difficulties, but she ended up in an asylum like her mother.
