There are black holes in every galaxy
Did you know that every galaxy has a black hole? Galaxies are basically the gated community of stars and planets. Here on Earth, we reside in the Milky Way Galaxy, but there are millions of other galaxies light-years away from us. And most galaxies are WAY bigger than ours! Scientists study our galaxy to learn more about others because they have found that most galaxies indeed have a black hole.
Specialized tools have allowed astronomers and astrophysicists to understand that every galaxy has a supermassive black hole within it. They theorize that these black holes play a role in keeping galaxies together. The Earth’s closest Supermassive black hole is Sagittarius A, containing 4 million times the mass of our sun. Out of all studied samples, this one provides the clearest image, which researchers use to map the flow of surrounding matter.
