Melanistic and Albino Alligators
Albinism is a medical term that refers to humans or animals with severely lightened pigmentation. Melanism may be a relatively recent phrase, but it describes an unusually high skin makeup resulting in a dark complexion. Certain rare alligator species have been observed to have either melanistic or albino tendencies.
According to statistics, there are approximately 20 melanistic and 300 albino alligators on the planet. We have leucistic alligators with white or pale skin coloration as well. They’re not easy to come by. The last sighting of one was in 1987, when it was discovered in a remote Louisiana swamp before being moved to an aquarium in New Orleans.
