Pufferfish vs. Moray Eel
On the Cook Islands, a rare moray eel over 4 feet long was discovered onshore. The death of this fish was caused by the pufferfish, which got caught in the eel’s throat, an uncommon occurrence. The pufferfish is extremely boney and causes significant damage to predator flesh that tries to consume it.
The eel has two distinct jaws: the oral jaw, which bites into its prey, and the pharyngeal jaws, which grip the game and pull it down the throat. It’s not unusual for an eel to feed on pufferfish, but this one made a mistake that day.
