It’s Funny Because It’s True
As an American, I can confirm that many of my friends and relatives don’t fully comprehend our language or know more than one. I’m sure it’s because our language is a hodgepodge of other languages, making it difficult to learn from alternatives. At the very least, structure-wise, Spanish and French have enough in common to make learning easier.
When it comes to Asian languages, I’ve always thought that they work so hard to learn how to write them that learning more becomes effortless. I’ve also been envious of other languages’ ability to express concepts in a single word. We have terms such as “procrastination” that do not translate well. That implies a lot.
