The Village of New York was a tiny hamlet at the turn of the nineteenth century. By the early 1700s, it had grown into a thriving metropolis owing to its proximity to the river. Wall Street has withstood the test of time as an important component of Manhattan. The street itself isn’t very long—only seven city blocks—but it’s revered as America’s financial center and has been since before the Civil War.
