Can whales sleep standing up?
Whales are fairly terrifying animals only because of how big they are compared to us. Many people have only seen them on a television screen or through the glass at an aquarium; it’s difficult to understand their size and just how small we actually are unless you’re up close. But besides their Leviathan-like stature, they also have some behaviors – such as sleep patterns – that still surprise, intrigue, and even frighten us land-dwellers.
Did you know that whales are not only mammals, but they can also sleep vertically? Whales must come to the surface close to breathe, and if you were swimming and found a group of them in this position, it would be an unbelievable sight. We have learned so much about these animals already, yet there is still more we don’t know. They truly are amazing creatures.
